“Thank you” note from workshop class (“stage”= French for workshop) at Virton, 2009

I present fiddle workshops with a focus on technique and supporting your development as a musician. Old time tunes are a great vehicle for taking the mystery out of theory, rhythmic subtleties, and bowing styles. You can see my latest instructor bio here.

Some of my specialties:

“Help for Frustrated Fiddlers”: It’s like a support group… with fiddles in hand. We all have challenges that block our progress. I can help you to approach your frustrations with a positive attitude and practical practice techniques.

“Singing with the Fiddle”: From a basic approach to harmonizing and providing more complex backing to your own singing.

“Ozark Heroes”: Many of the tunes in my repertoire come from Ozark traditionalists, like my “musical grandma”, Violet Hensley. I’ve also deeply studied the playing of Bob Holt, Cecil Goforth, Emmanuel Wood, and lesser-known Ozark fiddlers.

“Tunes John Hartford Loved”: A workshop devoted to the tunes played by John Hartford, one of my heroes. This workshop incorporates improvisational ideas and variations based on and inspired by Hartford’s playing as well as closely studying the tunes and original sources.

“Practical Theory for Fiddlers”: Theory is FUN, when I show you how!

I teach short workshops (2-3) hours, full-day workshops, and longer residencies. Some of the locations I’ve presented include Targhee Music Camp (Grand Targhee Resort, Alta, WY), Fiddle Tunes at Centrum (Port Townsend, WA), Folk Alliance International Winter Music Camp (Kansas City, MO), Musique Acoustique (Virton, Belgium), Old Town School of Folk Music (Chicago, IL), Dusty Strings (Seattle WA), St. Louis Folk and Roots Festival, Ozark Folk Center, Walnut Valley Music Festival (Winfield, KS), Wintergrass (while in Tacoma, WA), and many music stores and homes across the United States and internationally.
